First and foremost, congratulations on 20 years Sport Compact Car Magazine. You have definitely changed the landscape for the sport compact car market.
This is what made this issue so painful. Here I was reading their celebratory 20th anniversary only to find the SCC car wonderfully painted with great wheels, but the engine bay is empty, the interior is bare and there is no gas tank. Sure, from the outside the car looks great. But everything vital to its performance was properly and systematically looted, seemingly overnight. Now it lies as a shell of yesteryear.
The new regime of go-getters writing for SCC are trying hard to keep it going and stay to its roots – and should be given a chance by the community. The technology and intelligence in this issue was there as usual. Their desire to find the purity of the sport was there. This can be best described in their feature of an R34 Skyline had actual paint scars on it from usage. Their desire to show what is great technology for use all the time, not just for a fraction of a second during a post-processed photoshoot, is admirable and should always be supported.
But after 20 years, it has the feel of a magazine just struggling to start. 108 pages with 24% ads - although a lack of ads in a magazine are applauded, this isn’t a virtuous gesture. But just like a recent Tom Cruise movie on opening day - you’re happy there is plenty of empty chairs to choose from compared to his movies years ago, but you also know it won’t be showing on the large screen for much longer.
Here’s to your future, SCC.
Thanks.
